The origins of picnic

Being in contact with nature, enjoying the sun and the peace and quiet, that's what we're all looking for, away from the hassles of everyday life. And what better way to make the most of these moments of relaxation than by simply organising a good picnic ?

But where does the term "picnic" come from?

The origins of the word "picnic" go back to the 17th century, inspired by the french verb "piquer", a reference to chickens pecking at seeds, and "nique", which in old French meant "a thing of no value". Together, these two words mean "pecking at little things here and there".

Picnics go back further than you might think...

Picnic is an ancient art that dates back to the Renaissance, more precisely to the 18th century, when people ate outside without a table. This was the case, for example, in the countryside, where farmers ate in their fields, accompanied by their flocks. But also among the nobility during their hunting parties. In fact, the aristocracy made this activity hugely popular, later organising country meals where everyone made their own contribution. Louis XIV himself loved this practice, almost always travelling with meat, pastries or fruit.
The golden age of picnics came a little later, in the 19th century, particularly during republican festivities, when people took advantage of the great and sublime royal parks and gardens, previously off-limits to the general public, to organise tasty meals on the grass.

What has become of the picnic these days?

These days, eating is no longer the main reason for a picnic, even if it remains the main activity. Picnics are back in fashion as a way of meeting new people and, above all, as a way of recreating social links, celebrating or celebrating an event. At picnics, people share convivial meals, which are often cold and prepared in advance. It's an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone, whether in the countryside, on the beach, in the mountains, or in the gardens or quaysides of major cities.

That's why Les Jardins de la Comtesse, specialists in outdoor meals, offer you pretty hand-woven wicker picnic baskets and waterproof picnic's blanket. They're authentic and practical, and contain everything you need for a picnic. Discover the whole range, there's something for everyone!
